A young baron, of Polish descent, serves in the Tsarist army. When the January Uprising breaks out in the lands of the Russian Partition, he sets out with his squadron to suppress the rebellion. He will have to confront two different visions of Polishness: the one serving the Tsar as the king of Poland, and the insurgent one.
