A 10-year-old son of a soldier who stayed in England after the war, cannot hope for a peaceful childhood in the Stalinist Poland. His mother decides to send him away to be brought up by a friend as a war orphan. The company of his aunt, horse riding lover and a woman of unflagging spirit, becomes a unique school of life for the boy.
