The protagonist of the film is Jan Dolinski, a former prison guard of the Lublin castle prison. He worked there during the German occupation. Dolinski was working in the prison almost until the liquidation of it in 1954. He was fired because he didn’t want to sign up for the Polish United Workers’ Party.
