Preparations for President Lech Wałęsa’s visit to Russia encountered many difficulties. The main problem was lack of agreement regarding withdrawal of the former Soviet Army units from Poland. The President assumed the role of a negotiator and signed the treaty on withdrawal of the military. The delegation also visited Katyn, where a mass was held.
