In January 1945, the Warsaw Old Town welcomed the entering troops with grim silence amid the ruins and fires. Documentation of damaged buildings was assembled by architects. Poor and ugly district, after reconstruction it became a fashionable showpiece. Years later, a decision was made to rebuild the Royal Castle.
